A world-class faculty of scholars are fully engaged with their students' intellectual development, and an open curriculum encourages each student to explore many fields of knowledge. Undergraduates may major in such areas of study as:

* Classical Studies * Education * Medieval Studies * Music * Religion

While rich in history, Smith offers such alternative programs of study as a self-designed major. Smith also has the distinction of being one of the only female colleges to offer an Engineering degree. Smith is also part of the five-college system, which automatically gives Smith students access to courses at University of Massachusetts and four other nearby colleges.

All of Smith’s programs of study are of the highest caliber. In fact, Smith alumni include some of America’s most respected authors, politicians and academics.

Northampton is a small city that boasts many cultural and creative activities, including jazz concerts and poetry readings. On campus, students may attend academic lectures, participate in creative pursuits and attend traditional events.

Admissions at Smith are highly competitive. Applicants should have undertaken a rigorous high school curriculum. In addition to transcripts, applicants must submit recommendation letters, an essay and a list of extracurricular activities. An interview may also be required. Smith does not require standardized test scores.

Financial aid includes need-based federal grants and loans and Smith scholarships. Scholarship criteria include academic achievement and state of residence. Smith also participates in outside aid programs.
