National Mall Profile and History

As the leading nonprofit, nonpartisan philanthropic partner of the National Park Service dedicated to restoring, enriching and preserving the National Mall, the Trust brings expertise, private funding and in-kind support to time-sensitive restoration and sustainability projects, mobilizes volunteers and provides educational opportunities to ensure that the National Mall endures and evolves as a vi brant space for all. With over 36 million visits annually to the National Mall, combined with aging infrastructure and the need for better visitor amenities throughout the park, the Trust is helping the National Park Service tackle the more than $800 million needed for critical repairs and improvements. The Trust for the National Mall is committed to preserving the National Mall as a symbol of our nations ideals and civic purpose. In order to do so, the National Mall is undergoing multiple restoration projects and enhancements to programming to become a world-class model of sustainable urban park development. Designed to enhance the visitor experience, the plan is to more suitably connect people of all backgrounds to the monuments and memorials, educational opportunities, and great cultural institutions of our nation that serve as a backdrop to Americas Front Yard. The Trust for the National Mall represents one of the strongest public-private partnership in the history of the National Park Service and is responsible for bringing the National Mall Plan to life. Approved by the Park Service with over 2,000 stakeholders in 2010, the plan contains a comprehensive blueprint and detailed action plan to enhance the National Mall's beauty, usefulness, and sustainability.
