Southern Grampians Shire Council is encouraging all residents to help celebrate Australia Day at various venues around the shire. On Friday January 26, Council will host celebrations in Hamilton at the Botanic Gardens. The ceremony will begin at 10.30am and feature a range of presentations, entertainment and the winning entries of the Australia Day poetry competition, concluding with a free commun ity BBQ. Celebrations will also take place at all towns in the Shire including Balmoral, Branxholme, Byaduk, Cavendish, Coleraine, Dunkeld, Glenthompson, Penshurst and Tarrington. The Australia Day 2007 Ambassador Program sponsored by Woolworths Limited provides Ambassadors who will present keynote addresses on what being Australian means to them at the Hamilton, Coleraine and Glenthompson celebrations. Melbourne journalist and broadcaster Beverley O'Connor will speak in Hamilton. A journalist and broadcaster for 18 years, Ms. O'Connor presents news and entertainment for the Vega 91.5FM breakfast crew along side Dave O'Neill, Shaun Micallef and Denise Scott. She has worked for both ABC radio and television specialising in economics and politics and was a presenter on 774 in Melbourne for 5 years. Ms. O'Connor was also a presenter of the ABC's Asia Pacific News service, the VFL Saturday coverage, presented sport for Seven's News and was a presenter for Seven's Melbourne Weekender. Qantas Captain Dale Newman will feature in Coleraine at 8am and Glenthompson from 12 noon. Captain Newman is a Qantas Boeing 737 pilot and an Angel Flight volunteer, flying children from remote rural areas to larger hospitals for specialist treatment. Captain Newman also carries out voluntary work for the Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal charity flight. He is a Lecturer, in Human Factors training, a Mentor Captain, a Flight Operations PR Captain, Corporate Liaison Captain and convenor of the Fear of Flying course.
