Alpine Meadows has teamed up with the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe to help build a permanent shelter for the region's homeless pets. Alpine Meadows Ski Resort has partnered with the Humane Society of Truckee Tahoe (HSTT) for winter 2010/2011. Guests visiting the mountain will have the option of donating $1 at every point of sale, including lift ticket windows, retail and dining outlets, snow sports registration desks, and other locations. Funds raised through the program at Alpine Meadows will be donated directly to HSTT to contribute toward its goal of building a new shelter for homeless animals in the Truckee-Tahoe community while they wait for adoption. HSTT's capital campaign for the construction of a new shelter is underway, and the groundbreaking timeline is dependent upon fundraising results. Ideally, HSTT hopes to begin construction by summer of 2011. Truckee does not have a public shelter for homeless pets. Without a facility, HSTT struggles to find homes for the hundreds of animals received each year. The existing facility, which was built seven years ago, was intended to serve as a temporary shelter. HSTT is currently challenged to accommodate animals as they wait for adoption. HSTT and Animal Services have worked diligently to make the temporary kennel as comfortable for the animals as possible. That said, as the community grows, so does the homeless pet population and the current kennel doesn't meet the increasing demands. There is an urgent need to build a new shelter for our community's most helpless and defenseless creatures. "Through the opt-in donation campaign this winter, we hope to help HSTT achieve their financial goals toward the construction of a new animal shelter," said Deanna Gescheider, regional vice president of marketing and sales for JMA Ventures, LLC., parent company of Alpine Meadows. "HSTT provides an invaluable service to the Truckee Tahoe region, and offers animals and community members a wonderful resource. We're thrilled to partner with HSTT, and hope construction of the new shelter begins as soon as possible."
